It is the mission of the Sanborn/Timberlane
Safe and Drug Free Community Coalition to promote, support
and sustain healthy choices and lives for youth and their families
in our communities.
History
In the mid-eighties the Community Action Team operated as a coalition
in the Timberlane district with a full time coordinator for several
years. The group was very active, particularly in providing education
through the public access channel with PSAs, Peer Outreach programs,
etc. Through funding and membership changes the group evolved to
a resiliency committee distributing community newsletters, and acting
in an advisory capacity. Many of the members were also part of the
district Title IV Advisory Board. This group, under the leadership
of a few members, including Tim Lena, MSW, Timberlane District SAP
coordinator, evolved into the current coalition.
The coalition, prior to the Compassion Fund grant, mainly served
as an advisory board to the Timberlane District on their Safe and
Drug Free grant, in the final year of a three-year award. The Timberlane
District has accomplished a phenomenal amount in this time as far
as programming and services within their system. Tim Lena continues
to serve as chair and has been a member of this coalition, under
it’s various names for seven years.
The Compassion Fund
The Compassion Fund (federal DHHS) awarded to The Sad Café
has two goals, one for capacity building of The Sad Café
and the other to assist in building the coalition.
Funding provided for a part-time coalition coordinator to assist
with broadening and formalizing the coalition, as well as moving
it from an advisory capacity to a planning/action/task based system.
Inclusion of the Sanborn school district within the catchment area
of the coalition was the first priority. In addition, while the
focus of the coalition to date has been on youth and the provision
of prevention services through the schools, the broadening of the
vision is to address the many needs of children, youth and families
on a community wide basis. Many members expressed their desire to
see the coalition make this transition. The Sanborn District towns,
as well as Hampstead and Fremont, in collaborating with the coalition
will bring much to the table and all would benefit from addressing
the needs and exploring the assets of the region.
Governor’s Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention,
Intervention and Treatment
In August 2004 the Coalition was granted $74,250 in response to
the Governor’s Commission proposal submitted by the coalition
partners The Sad Café, Sanborn and Timberlane Regional School
Districts and the Center for Life Management. This project allowed
for the creation of a full time master’s level position to
provide onsite (school) and homebased treatment as well as in school
prevention activities for one year within the two districts. This
project has been well received and is established within the community.

intervention and prevention services in Sanborn and Timberlane Regional
School Districts.
Ongoing
The coalition currently holds quarterly coalition meetings with
steering committee meetings held at least monthly. Networks of the
coalition have been formed and continue to develop. Current Networks
include the Interfaith Network, School Network, Policy Network and
Community Network. The coalition currently has a roster of over
70 members.
